Mettur dam likely to be full tomorrow
The Mettur dam across river Cauvery, which opened its sluice gates for irrigation purposes last evening, was all set to be full by Friday morning due to increased water inflow from Karnataka, an official said.
As per the readings taken at 8 am today, the inflow was 105,003 cusecs while the outflow was 12,000 cusecs.
The water level in the dam stood at 113.21 feet against the full level of 120 feet.
"If water is reaching the dam at this pace, the maximum level will be reached by tomorrow morning," PWD Upper Cauvery Division Superintending Engineer R Subramanian told the media.
He cautioned people living on the banks of Cauvery to be alert as huge quantity of water would flow through the river once the flood gates are opened when the dam is full.
The sluice gates of the dam were partially opened at 6pm yesterday to supply water for irrigation purposes in the Cauvery delta regions of Tamil Nadu.
District Collector N Mathivanan and Mettur MLA G K Mani where present when the dam gates were opened.
The Stanley Reservoir at Mettur was receiving copius inflow in the last few days after the upstream Krishnarajasagar and Kabini dams in Karnataka were full and sending out surplus water following heavy rains.
