Men with fake IDs working at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project arrested
Khan had enlisted for work at the project as S ubodh Paswan, a resident of Barajj, Vaishali district in Bihar. He worked as a welder at the project.
Mohamed Meeraj Khan (25), a resident of Ghazipur in UP, was arrested on Tuesday following a complaint by the KKNPP administration. Khan had enlisted for work at the project as Subodh Paswan, a resident of Barajj, Vaishali district in Bihar. He worked as a welder at the project.
N Reghunath (45), who owns the computer centre in Nagercoil, provided the fake identity card to Khan, the police claim. Officers suspect that Regunath could have sold similar fake documents to many other workers at KKNPP. A raid at the computer centre found specimens of ID cards of the contract firm that hired Khan as well as scanned signatures of government officials.
A senior police officer told TOI that the incident has revealed chinks in the security set-up at the sensitive project, which could be exploited by extremist groups. KKNPP deputy general manager (HR) V Chellappa said the arrested youth was not working in any sensitive wing at the project and hence there was no reason to be worried. He claimed that the arrests were made after KKNPP administration detected the impersonation during a routine check.
KKNPP has stringent guidelines on recruitment of workers. Contract firms that supply workers are expected to get their identification documents attested by village administrative officers . But one of the contract firms, Kaefer Punj Lloyd Limited, clearly slipped in following the procedure. The project administration has asked labour contractors to scrutinise the identification credentials of all the workers.
