SHILLONG: Meghalaya wants to continue the lockdown beyond May 3 to stem the spread of COVID-19, CM Conrad Sangma said on Monday after a teleconference of state chief ministers with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The chief minister, however, said some relaxations will be introduced in green zones and non-COVID-19 affected districts after the nationwide shutdown has been lifted.

"At the video conference called by Honble PM @narendramodi ji and Honble Home Minister @AmitShah ji. We have mooted to continue with the lockdown in #Meghalaya. #CovidUpdates," Sangma tweeted after the video conference.

Sangma apprised the PM of the Meghalaya model of “Rapid Response System”, wherein a response within a specified time frame is initiated by the health deparetment, administration and police on detection of new Covid-19 case

“The rapid response system will enable the government to work at micro level, like the panchayat institutions and prepare us for any such situation that may arise in future,” Sangma said at the meeting.

He also suggested that an “Economic Task Force” be set up comprising all the states for exchange of ideas and to work out possible solutions on the many economic issues that have risen since the lokdown came into effect.

“There is an economic state to state dependence. The establishment of economic task force will help states and its adjoining neighbours to a large extent in devising practical measures to revive the economic,” he added.
