There is growing demand for NRC in Meghalaya after neighbouring Assam published final draft NRC on July 30.

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said Meghalaya would implement National Register of Citizens (NRC) in phased manner.

There is growing demand for NRC in Meghalaya after neighbouring Assam published final draft NRC on July 30.

Sangma, while speaking in the state assembly, said that considering all pros and cons and taking all stakeholders into confidence, NRC would be taken up in the state.

Terming the issue as sensitive, Sangma said: “NRC exercise involves huge expenditure and deployment of large number of manpower. It requires extensive consultation and such an exercise cannot be done over night. There is, however, need for NRC in the state.”

The chief minister argued Meghalaya Residents’ Safety Act has sufficient provisions to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people.

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to move a resolution seeking implementation of inner line permit (ILP) in the state. Soon after publication of NRC in Assam student bodies have set up check points in different areas of the state to check the documents’ of people coming from other states.
