Meghalaya giving priority to health care

In conformity with the Centre's policy, Meghalaya government was giving priority on improvement of the healthcare services and rural development, Chief Minister D D Lapang said on Thursday.

SHILLONG: In conformity with the Centre's policy, Meghalaya government was giving priority on improvement of the healthcare services and rural development, Chief Minister D D Lapang said on Thursday.

Addressing a function of the 8th World Sight Day organised by state Health and Family Welfare department here, Lapang said the Centre was implementing various schemes for rural development including the National Rural Health Mission and National Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Lapang said the National Employment Guarantee Scheme would be implemented in three more districts of Ri Bhoi, Jaintia and West Khasi Hills.

Lapang, who released 18 ambulances for various primary health centres and community health centres in the state to be utilised by the National Rural Health Mission, said these vehicles would be of use for health officials to take people in remote areas to referral centres and hospitals.

Health minister Deborah C Marak said an eye sight-related ailment was a big problem.

"As the eye is a very delicate part of the body, medicines prescribed by local medical practioners should be avoided," he cautioned alerting people against quacks.
