Meghalaya bypoll results to decide CM Conrad Sangma’s fate

GUWAHATI: While Ranikor Assembly constituency in South West Khasi hills witnessed a voting percentage of over 83.2%, South Tura registered 72.87%.

Meghalaya’s Chief Election Officer F R Kharkongo told ET, “In the by-election to two constituencies, the voting percentage is likely to go for we are still getting reports from some booths. The polling was by and large peaceful and incident-free.”

By-polls to South Tura seat will decide the fate of Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma.


Sangma is leading the six-party coalition government, which include regional parties and BJP. Conrad is the Lok Sabha MP from Tura.South Tura’s National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Agatha Sangma recently vacated the seat for his brother Sangma, who became chief minister on March 6. Sangma has to get elected in state assembly within six months. In a bitter battle, Sangma is pitted against Congress’s Charlotte W Momin and Independents John Leslee K Sangma and Chris Kabul A Sangma.

By-poll was necessitated in Ranikor after senior Congress leader Martin Danggo resigned from the assembly and joined NPP. Congress has been winning this seat for almost 20 years.
