Tamil Nadu government will take up a mega project" to develop Rameswaram as a major pilgrim and tourism centre in the country, Tourism Minister S Gokula Indira said.

RAMESWARAM: Tamil Nadu government will take up a mega project" to develop Rameswaram as a major pilgrim and tourism centre in the country, Tourism Minister S Gokula Indira said.

Talking to reporters, she said the mega project would be taken up keeping in view the needs of visiting pilgrims, tourists and local people.

As part of the development works, new roads would be laid in Rameswaram and its peripheries, besides basic infrastructures, beautification of the town and tourist-friendly facilities will be made.

The previous DMK regime had allocated Rs 25 crores for developing Rameswaram in which Rs 12 crores was already spent. The remaining sum would be utilized for the mega project and if necessary additional fund would be allotted by the State government, she said.
