NEW DELHI: Senior IFS officer Meera Shankar was on Friday named the next ambassador to the United States, making her the second Indian lady envoy in Washington.

Shankar, currently ambassador to Germany, will succeed Ronen Sen whose extended four-year term ends on March 31.

The 1973-batch officer will be the first serving diplomat to be posted in the US in more than two decades after K Shankar Bajpai. Bajpai was in Washington from 1984 to 1986.

She is expected to take up her new assignment shortly, the ministry of external affairs said while announcing the appointment.

This will be her second tenure in Washington as she was posted there from 1991 to 1995 as Minister (Commerce).

During her earlier stint in the US, Shankar was part of a dream team of women diplomats serving under former Ambassador S S Ray.
