MCD to give ownership of 15,000 properties to 1947 refugees
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi decided to transfer ownership rights of nearly 10,625 residential and 3,770 commercial units to the Partition refugees who were allotted the properties after 1947.
The Standing of Committee of the MCD passed a resolution to this effect and directed the Municipal Corporation to launch a survey of the properties so that the process of transfer can be started soon.
Most of the properties are occupied by economically weaker sections of the society and the allottees are living in or using the units for decades, Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said.
The civic body is getting very low rent from the units and therefore, has not been able to spend on their maintenance and development, he said.
In 2007-08, the MCD has received Rs 49.42 lakh as rent from these 14,395 units, while the expenditure on maintenance had been Rs 141.16 lakh.
The units were allotted to partition refugees on nominal fees so that they could be rehabilitated.
"It is proper that as welfare measure, these properties be transferred to the allottees or occupants on ownership basis. It will also ensure that these properties are properly maintained by the owners," Gupta said.
The proposal received support from across party lines.
