WASHINGTON : US Republican presidential candidate John McCain's campaign office in Denver, Colorado has been evacuated after receiving a threatening letter with suspicious white powder, a spokesman has said.

The campaign told reporters on Thursday that the office immediately reported to the local and federal police after a staff member received the letter in the afternoon.

All necessary precautionary measures had been taken, including evacuation of the office, where dozens of people were at work, said spokesman Jeff Sadosky.

He also said that the unknown powder was contained in the envelope and the person who delivered the mail was untracked.

Denver is gearing up to host hosting the Democratic National Convention, from Aug 25 to 28, where Barack Obama would be officially elected and announced as the party's presidential nominee.
