McCain says Obama promises wrong change for country

Republican John McCain says Democratic rival Barack Obama and his promises of change would be bad for the country.

NEW ORLEANS: Republican John McCain says Democratic rival Barack Obama and his promises of change would be bad for the country.

In prepared remarks, McCain welcomed Obama to the general election race. The likely Republican nominee said, "This is, indeed, a change election. But the choice is between the right change and the wrong change, between going forward and going backward."

McCain sought to distance himself from President George W. Bush by choosing to campaign in suburban New Orleans, a city whose ravages from Hurricane Katrina became a glaring symbol of Bush administration incompetence.

McCain used his speech to dispute the contention by Obama and the Democrats that a McCain victory would amount to a third term for Bush.
