KOLKATA: One of the oldest city-based trade bodies, the Merchant Chamber of Commerce, on Monday said it would felicitate the three living Param Vir Chakra awardees on May 31 to mark the occasion of 150th anniversary of India's First War of Independence.
"There are only three living Param Vir Chakra awardees out of 21 and we will felicitate them together in a grand function which would be presided by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat," MCC president Santosh Saraf said here today.
The three awardees include Captain (retired) Bana Singh, who had captured the world's highest 'Quaid post' on Siachen Glacier in 1987. The other two, Havildar Yogender Singh Yadav and Halvildar Sanjay Kumar, received the award for their bravery during the Kargil war in 1999.
Saraf said that the decision to celebrate the event was prompted by the fact that the over-100-years-old chamber had contibuted its bit in the freedom struggle by boycotting foreign goods, mostly textiles and other such acts.
