Mayawati sets up high-powered panel to probe recruitment scam

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet decides to set up a high-powered committee to further probe the charges of corruption and the extent of malpractices committed in the recruitment drive.

LUCKNOW: To come up with a water-tight case against those involved in the police and PAC recruitment scam, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Thursday decided to set up a high-powered committee, headed by chief secretary PK Mishra, to further probe the charges of corruption and the extent of malpractices committed in the recruitment drive.

With the enquiry committee headed by Shailja Kant Mishra, ADG (STF), completing its probe in the scam and submitting its report to the government, the new committee will be looking into the anomalies and allegations pointed out in the reports. The high-powered panel would have DGP Vikram Singh and divisional commissioner, Lucknow, as its member.

Cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said the committee would also ascertain whether the officers involved in the recruitment process in 2005-06 were under any pressure and identify those who tried to influence the decision. The recruitment scam took place during the Mulayam Singh Yadav’s rule in 2005-06. The enquiry panel had earlier disclosed that a top politician of the Mr Yadav dispensation and some senior police officials had also tried to sexually exploit female candidates during the recruitment drive.

The committee would frame policies for fresh recruitment in order to make the process transparent and weed out chances of corruption. It would also finalise guidelines for all future recruitment and study the report submitted by home secretary Renuka Kumar on the matter.
