Mayawati: decision to send the Delhi rape victim to Singapore was wrong
LUCKNOW: BahujanSamaj Party chief Mayawati on Saturday said that the people agitating over the gang rape of a girl in a New Delhi bus were justified in their anger.
She said that it has been observed that the government of the day after some knee jerk reaction to such incidents soon forgets about the issue and the guilty escape strict punishment. In such a situation the anger and frustration of the people as being seen on the streets is justified.

She called for framing strict laws to prevent crime against women and demanded severe punishment for those who had gang raped the girl who died in a Singapore hospital on Saturday.

Mayawati also said that the decision to send the girl to Singapore was wrong and that the long journey could have led to deterioration in her health conditions.

She said that to ensure safety of women in the country strict laws should be farmed so that crime against women could be stopped.

Mayawati said that she had written to the Prime Minister on 23 December and also raised the issue of crime against women in the parliament.

She said that in the ten months since the Samajwadi Party formed the government in Uttar Pradesh, more than 1,500 cases of rape and heinous crime have taken place but the government has not brought the guilty to book.

She said that people are questioning the Samajwadi Party government about how many guilty people have been booked for crime against women and the victim's given justice and government jobs during the last ten months since it has been in power.

Mayawati said that even the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid in Delhi has said, that leave alone justice even FIR's are not lodged against rapists in UP.
