NEW DELHI: The Centre considers grant of maternity leaves to surrogate mothers on case to case basis and it has been given in few cases, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said here today.

A female government servant may be granted maternity leave for a period of 135 days (slightly more than four months) from the date of its commencement. During such period, she shall be paid leave salary equal to the pay drawn immediately before proceeding on leave, the rules says.

"The government of India considers grant of maternity leave to surrogate mothers on case to case basis keeping in view the totality of the circumstances of each case. Recently maternity leave was granted in a few cases," he said in reply to a written question in Lok Sabha.
