Maruti factory violence case: Court sentences life imprisonment for 13, five-year jail term for four

NEW DELHI: After more than four years of trial, Haryana Court today sentenced 13 for life imprisonment, five-year jail term for four in 2012 Maruti factory violence case.

While pronouncing the sentence, Court said other 14 convicts have already served the sentence.

On March 10, the court had convicted 31 employees of the factory, including 13 of murder, in connection with the case; and had acquitted 117 of the 148 employees named in the charge sheet in the case for want of evidence. The court had reserved the sentencing for today.


The 2012 labour unrest at Maruti's Manesar factory was one of the most violent in the country in recent years. Awanish Kumar Dev, a general manager in the human resources department, was beaten up and burnt to death inside the facility. At least 100 executives were also injured.

For a month, the company locked out workers at the factory that produced 1,600 cars a day, losing Rs 70 crore each day.
