NEW DELHI: Communal Violence in India has risen marginally in the 17 months of the Narendra Modi as compared with the last 17 months of the UPA-2 government. This is despite Muzzafarnagar riots in Uttar Pradesh which led to high number of incidents in 2013.

ET collating these figures from officials figures of the Home Ministry fur nished before Parliament in recent years. There have been 1062 incidents of communal violence in Period 1 and 1055 incidents in Period 2.

These figures also show that communal strife is up in four major BJPruled states ever since power changed hands in Delhi. Incidents of communal violence during Period 1 in Gujarat, since Anandiben Patel took over as the Chief Minister from Narendra Modi, have risen to 105 from 84 in Period 2.

In Period 1, Madhya Pradesh saw 128 incidents compared to 98 in Period 2. Shivraj Singh Chauhan has been Chief Minister of MP since 2005. This year till October, Madhya Pradesh has seen 86 incidents, more than double of the 42 in the same period of first 10 months in 2014.

Devendra Fadnavis took over as Maharashtra CM last November. Till October, the state saw 97 incidents of communal trouble, up from 82 in same period of 2014 under the Congress-NCP government.

Overall, since the Modi government came to power in Delhi, Maharashtra’s record is 151 communal incidents in Period 1, up from 131 in Period 2. Rajasthan has seen 99 incidents of communal violence in Period 1, up from 79 in Period 2. Vasundhra Raje has pulled back things in 2015 with 54 incidents reported till October compared to 61 in 2014.
