Maoists to launch agitation if demands not met
Maoists in Nepal will launch a nationwide agitation if their demands are not met before November 22 polls.
The former rebels warned of a "new people's movement from the government, Parliament and the street" if their 22-point demands are not addressed, according to party sources.
Maoists' second-in-rank leader, Baburam Bhattarai, urged political forces, professional organisations, civil society, media and the general public to support their agitation.
The protest programmes include party's publicity campaigns, mobilisation of Maoist cadres till September 17, followed by "phase-wise mass assemblies, people's action and political strikes" from September 18.
In a statement, Bhattarai informed that the CPN-Maoists fraternal wings could also announce their own separate protest programmes.
"We decided to begin the campaign because elections scheduled for November is not possible unless the nation is immediately declared a republic," Bhattarai said.
The Maoists' demands include declaration of Nepal a republic, nationalisation of late King's property, removal of Army from the royal palace, formation of local-level bodies, withdrawal of cases against former rebels and freeing those Maoists who are jailed in criminal cases etc.
There are around 5,000 army personnel deputed in the royal palace for security purposes.
