Several men from Hindi speaking and Bengali communities in Assam are married to women from states such as Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. These women traced family legacies to their respective states but failed to produce appropriate documents. In some cases, the documents produced were not admissible and a large number remained unverified by the respective states despite repeated reminders to chief secretaries.
Illa Bhoumik, who had moved to Guwahati from Jalpaiguri in West Bengal after being married, said she had submitted documents pertaining to her school to prove her legacy. But her name did not appear. Around 1.5 lakh documents were sent to West Bengal for verification and only 15,000 were verified.

Congress leader Raman Jha’s forefathers hail from Bihar but the family has been residing in Assam for several decades. His name is not on the NRC list. He said, “In case of Hindi speaking people, several women, who have come to Assam after marriage did not find their names in draft NRC.. ”
Around 5,72,809 documents were sent to other states and around 403 sent to 37 foreign countries for verification. These documents were largely sent to Northeastern states besides West Bengal, Bihar and Rajasthan. However, only 1, 75,479 verified documents were returned.
