Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has greeted legendary South African leader Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday and wished him many more productive years of service to his country and humanity.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has greeted legendary South African leader Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday and wished him many more productive years of service to his country and humanity.

In his letter to Mandela, Singh recalled how the former South African President fought against the abhorrent system of apartheid, becoming a symbol of the struggle of oppressed people all round the world.

He also recalled how people in India were especially privileged to have been closely associated with the African National Congress's liberation movement.

Singh noted Mandela's significant contribution to revitalizing the historical bonds between India and South Africa.

Prime Minister wished Mandela many more productive years of service to South Africa and to humanity.
