NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today condoled the demise of noted historian Bipan Chandra, saying in his death, the country has lost a foremost scholar on India's independence movement.

In a letter to Chandra's son Bikas, Singh wrote that India has lost a prominent historian and a foremost scholar on Indian independence movement.

Singh also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family members.

86-year-old Chandra died at his Gurgaon residence near here this morning following a prolonged illness.
