Manipur governor Ashwini Kumar visits Indo-Myanmar border

The state government had earlier urged the Centre to ask Myanmar to stop construction of border fencing until a joint survey of the areas by both governments.

IMPHAL: Manipur governor Ashwini Kumar visited Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district, where Myanmar authorities have erected fencing near Moreh town.

During his visit yesterday, the governor met village chiefs and district officials, official sources said here on Wednesday. Village chiefs and officials gave a detailed report to the governor who assured them that he would take up the fencing issue with the state and central governments, the sources said.

A team headed by Manipur's principal secretary home visited the areas on Monday and it would submit a report to the state government which would be forwarded to the Centre.

The state government had earlier urged the Centre to ask Myanmar to stop construction of border fencing until a joint survey of the areas by both governments. Myanmar had some days ago tried to construct a base camp next to Holenphai village near Moreh but was persuaded not to do so until the joint survey, they said.

Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh had urged the central government to settle the issue with Myanmar authorities at the earliest, the sources said.
