Mani Shankar Aiyar demands more budget to promote sports
There is a need to frame legislation to ensure status of sports and games at par with education and health, Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said on Sunday.
Speaking at the inauguration of late Jawaharlal Darda Indoor Stadium here, he said comprehensive sports policy has been gathering dust since 1988.
He said sports and games is a state subject and the state government should find its own resources to develop them.
Aiyar said the budget allocation for 2007-08 was only 0.073 per cent and it is almost same in the budget this year.
"I have demanded one per cent of the budget allocation which would give me 15 times more than what is allocated today," he said adding he has submitted a project proposal Panchayat Yuva Krida Abhiyan.
Aiyar has also assured to resolve the issue of encroachment on 100 acre land in Kandivili, Mumbai based Sports Complex of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in consultation with the state government.
Expressing concern over poor performance of Indian sports-persons at the international events, Aiyar said 77 crore people of our population are below 35-year and mere 5 crore students have sports infrastructure facility in the country.
Maharashtra Education & Sports Minister Vasant Purke and Rajya Sabha member Vijay Darda also spoke on the occasion.
