Man linked to Tagore's stolen medal nabbed in B'desh
Security forces in Bangladesh have nabbed a man in Dhaka that could lead to solving the case into the theft of the Nobel prize medal of poet Rabindranath Tagore.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh arrested Mohammad Hossain Shiplu, 32, from Dhakas Azimpur area, believing him to be a close aide of Jiban Singh, the prime suspect in the Nobel medal theft case filed with the Indian police.
The Indian authorities had earlier informed their counterparts in Dhaka that they believed that the stolen medal had been brought to Bangladesh.
Suspecting both to be members of an international artefact-smuggling syndicate, CID sources said they had information that Shiplu was providing shelter to Singh in Bangladesh.
The medal and its certificate as well as some personal possessions of the poet were from a museum of Visva Bharati University, founded by Tagore, the first Bengali Nobel laureate. Sweden's Nobel Foundation had offered two replicas of the stolen medallion to the Visva Bharati University in 2005.
The elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in November last year carried out a massive security drive to recover the stolen medal after arresting a suspect of an international antique smuggling racket.
"We are sure that we are on the right track in our investigation but need some more clues for recovering the stolen valuables," a senior RAB official had said earlier.
