Man killed in Nashik as violence flares up

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena-sponsored agitation against migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar claimed its first casualty in Nashik amid high drama surrounding MNS chief Raj Thackeray���s arrest and subsequent bail in Mumbai.

Several incidents of arson, stone-pelting and violence have been reported from all over the state. More than 1,800 MNS workers have been detained. There are reports of many migrants fleeing the state, too.

Ambadas Dharrao, an employee of Hindustan Aeronautics, was killed in stone-pelting allegedly by MNS activists who were protesting against the arrest of Mr Thackeray. Ironically for the MNS, the deceased happened to be a ���Marathi manoos���. Mr Dharrao, 55, a resident of Indira Nagar, was returning home in a company bus from Ojhar, 21 km from Nashik, when the MNS workers pelted stones at the bus. The driver of the bus, who was also injured, was admitted to Nashik civil hospital, the police said.

Several incidents of arson, stone-pelting and violence were also reported from across the state as tension built up over Mr Thackeray���s arrest. In Nashik, another bus coming to the city from Mumbai was stoned, injuring its driver. Party activists tried to set ablaze an MSRTC bus.

A couple of state corporation buses were stoned at various places in the city following the arrest of Mr Thackeray, the police said, adding 15 persons were injured in the violence. MNS��� Nashik unit president Nitin Bhosale was arrested, along with five other party workers, as over 40 incidents of stone pelting were reported from several pockets of the city.

In Mumbai, violence broke out in various parts following the arrest, the police said. Shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and office-goers headed back home early anticipating violence.

Deputy commissioner of police Makarand Ranade said a couple of buses were targeted by a mob at Dahisar, following which many of them have been arrested. He said a truck caught fire at Dahisar accidentally and the post-arrest protests have nothing to do with it. Three persons were apprehended while forcing closure of shops in Jogeshwari locality, DCP K M Prasanna said.

Earlier in the day, six persons were picked up by the police on the charge of unlawful assembly from Pant Nagar locality in suburban Ghatkopar. Across the city, over 150 MNS activists were picked up who were protesting against the government action. The police also made several preventive arrests of MNS and SP workers. Violence and stone-pelting were reported from Pune too, where angry MNS workers stoned a number of transport buses.

In many localities even as shopkeepers in many parts downed their shutters. The part activists were seen moving around asking shopowners to close their shops. The police have already rounded up some 50 MNS workers in the city which had witnessed large-scale vandalism on Tuesday.
