KOLKATA: In an immediate response to Mecca accident in which more than 100 pilgrims were killed, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced a Rs 10 compensation for a deceased victim from the state and Rs 1 lakh each for two injured victims of Bengal. It was reported that around two Indians were killed in the accident there.

Banerjee today posted in Face Book , “It is reported that the tragic accident at Mecca has resulted in many casualties. My heartfelt condolences are there with the families of the deceased. From our state, 1 person has died and 2 are injured, as per reports so far.”

Announcing the compensation, she said, “All Haj pilgrims from the state have an insurance cover of Rs 3 lakh. Though, monetary compensation cannot be a substitute for life lost, still we are trying our best to provide all support and co-operation to the distressed families. Our government will give Rs.10 lakh as financial assistance to the family of the deceased and Rs.1 lakh to each of the injured pilgrims. Full co-operation will be provided from our side to all those who need assistance in this situation, “Banerjee added.
