Mamata to support UPA after polls

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee made it clear on Monday that she would support the UPA after the 2009 general elections. She also hoped that Congress would not take help of the Left parties, the CPIM in particular to form the government in Delhi.

Releasing the manifesto of her party, Mamata said "We want a permanent government at the Centre and the so-called Third Front will not be able to provide that. We want a secular government in Delhi and certainly, the BJP will not be able to offer the same. Naturally, we will support the UPA to form the government," Mamata said when asked to comment which coalition her party will support after the Lok Sabha polls.

Significantly, the Trinamool Congress chief also said that the Congress-led UPA would not seek support from CPIM and other Left parties to form government in case there is a hung parliament. "We are with the Congress and I can tell you that this time the Congress will not seek support from the Left and that is why we are with the Congress," the Trinamool supremo said.

There had been some confusion within the Congress and in political circles in both Kolkata and Delhi over Mamatas stand on the BJP. The Congress leadership was very keen to know whether Mamata still belongs to the BJP-led NDA. Before finalising the electoral adjustment with Mamata, Congress leaders in West Bengal had urged her to clear her stand over NDA, whether she still belonged to the BJP-led coalition.

It is learnt that Mamata had assured Congress leaders in Delhi that she would snap her ties with the BJP-led NDA in order to strike an electoral deal with the Congress in West Bengal. On Monday, Mamata categorically made it clear that even after the Lok Sabha polls, she will be with the Congress.

Congress leader and AICC member, K.Keshav Rao, also said a couple of days ago in Delhi that the electoral adjustment with Mamata Banerjee would remain effective in the elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) scheduled to be held in 2010. This clearly suggests that the tie-up between the two opposition parties in West Bengal will last long.
