Mamata to address rally in Singur tomorrow
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will address a rally in Singur on Saturday to demand the return of farm land "forcibly acquired" for the Tata Motors' project.
This will be the first protest In Singur since the Calcutta High Court quashed prohibitory orders imposed there.
Banerjee today questioned Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's defence of the imposition of prohibitory orders in Singur on the ground that policemen were being attacked and fencing posts burnt at the site of Tata Motors' small car plant there.
"How can the chief minister threaten to re-impose section 144 CRPC in Singur after the court quashed the prohibitory orders?" she asked.
Banerjee vowed not to rest till Bhattacharjee returned the "forcibly acquired" land to Singur's farmers.
Only if this was done, the Trinamool Congress would take up the chief minister's offer of talks on the issue, she told the media.
On veteran CPI-M leader Jyoti Basu's remark that she was creating trouble in West Bengal, she said, "He is being used by his party to make unsubstantiated and preposterous statements."
Tomorrow's rally in Singur will be the first protest there to be led by Banerjee since her 25-day fast in December on the same issue. The rally is being organised by the new state-level "Save Farm Land Committee", of which she is the president.
She had held a public meeting at Chanditala, 10 km away from Singur, on February 10.
