Mamata suggests separate secretariat for entire North Bengal
Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said a separate secretariat in Siliguri for North Bengal could defuse tension and give more attention towards development in all six districts including Darjeeling.
"A separate secretariat for the entire North Bengal, besides a restructured and strengthened North Bengal Development Council under the leadership of a high-power officials can only ensure government's commitment towards the entire region and keep at bay agitations as in the Darjeeling hills and Dooars," Banerjee said, addressing the party workers at South 24-Parganas district.
Attacking CPI(M)-led Left Front government in West Bengal, she said that it never gave importance to development of region including Darjeeling hills and North Bengal Development Council.
She asked why the problem of Darjeeling was not solved in last 20 years and the issue had been kept alive, saying her party was in favour of development in all six districts in North Bengal including Darjeeling.
"But my statement on our party's stand on Darjeeling issue following Chief Minister's invitation to all-party meeting was distorted in a section of media," she regretted.
Reiterating her condition, Banerjee said that her party would join the June 17 all-party meeting if all political parties, including the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), were invited by the state government.
