Mamata included in Cabinet committee on political affairs

In a move that demonstrates her growing clout within the ruling coalition at the Centre, railway minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Benerjee has been made a member of the Cabinet committee on political affairs.

NEW DELHI: In a move that demonstrates her growing clout within the ruling coalition at the Centre, railway minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Benerjee has been made a member of the Cabinet committee on political affairs.

The powerful cabinet sub-panel, tasked with the job of taking crucial political decisions, has been reconstituted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The committee, which is chaired by the prime minister himself, includes three representatives from the Congress��� alliance partners. Apart from Ms Banerjee, the other CCPA members from the ``alliance������ quota are agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and a DMK nominee, who���s yet to be named. The Trinamool Congress leader replaces RJD strongman Lalu Prasad, who was a member of the previous CCPA.

The Congress contingent in the CCPA includes, besides the prime minister, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, defence minister A K Antony, home minister P Chidambaram and external affairs minister S M Krishna.

The Trinamool Congress, which has a strength of 20 in the Lok Sabha, was rewarded for its performance in West Bengal by being conferred a cabinet and six MoS-level berths.
