Mamata demands statement from cabinet on land acquisition

In a bid to widen the rift between the CPI(M) and its allies in the Left Front on land acquisition, Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday called for an unequivocal statement from the cabinet and Left Front committee on the issue.

KOLKATA: In a bid to widen the rift between the CPI(M) and its allies in the Left Front on land acquisition, Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday called for an unequivocal statement from the cabinet and Left Front committee on the issue.

She rejected state Industry Minister Nirupam Sen's recent plea that Bengal government would look for a consensus with the new Trinamool Congress-led Zilla parishads before going ahead with land acquisition for setting up projects like those of the Indonesian business house Salim Group.

"We are not going to accept any proposal of any individual minister because they are speaking in so many voices on the question of land acquisition for industry.

There is a cabinet and a Left Front committee and we would respond only to those proposals which have the approval of the cabinet and the committee," she said.

Banerjee's comment came at a time when non-CPI(M) allies in the ruling Left Front have been opposing the industrialisation drive by acquiring farmland to set up industry.

Left Front partners RSP and Forward Bloc have vowed to oppose setting up of industry on farmland.

"There is a new leadership at the district level in East Midnapore and South 24-Paraganas after the panchayat polls. We will consult them for a consensus before going ahead with the new projects," Sen told reporters in New Delhi recently.

Asked about the projects of the Salim Group, he had said, "the government will acquire land for the projects after a consensus at the grassroots level."
