Mamata demands Bhattacharjee's resignation

CHANDIPUR: Demanding Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's resignation for "creating unrest" in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that she would continue the agitation against farmland acquisition in the state.
Banerjee, who was speaking to reporters outside Nandigram, said she was determined to go to the troubled areas to meet villagers against whom the state had launched the police action on Wednesday.
Banerjee's convoy had been stopped by CPI(M) activists last night. CPI(M) supporters were seen picketing on the road this morning also as her convey proceeded towards Nandigram.
She accused Bhattacharjee of creating "unrest" in the area in the name of industrialisation.
Asked about her stand on industrialisation, she said industry and agriculture were two different things and one should be sacrificed for the other.
She also alleged that agricultural land was being taken away from the farmers but no proper compensation was paid to them.
In a major flare-up of violence on Wednesday in protest against the acquisition of land for industries in Nandigram, 11 people were killed and 75 others injured when police opened fire on a violent crowd that fought pitched battles with the men in uniform here.
