KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has criticised giving of Padma Vibhusan to External Affairs Minister and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee and said "it was a political award".

"Why has Pranab Mukherjee been given Padma Vibhusan. What is his contribution to the country?" Banerjee said questioning the reason in giving the award to him.

"Pranab Mukherjee is CPI(M)'s spokesman in West Bengal and in Delhi he plays to the tune of the Congress' top leadership and I thing political consideration played a part in giving such an award to him," she said.

She was critical for giving Padma Vibhusan to industrialist Ratan Tata and said "political consideration played a part in Tata getting the award".

"Padma awards have turned out to be political awards," she said.

About giving Padma Shri award to swimmer Bula Chowdhury, the TC chief said "we treat her (Bula) as a CPI(M) MLA."
