Mamata Banerjee’s address at St Stephen’s College called off

Sources in TMC claimed that the college had to suspend the programme under “tremendous pressure by the saffron brigade”

Significantly, in last one month three events where Banerjee was supposed to participate , were called off.
The proposed programme at St Stephens college in Delhi, where West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, was scheduled to address students , has been called off a couple of days before the programme.

Even though, the official reason for this cancellation is yet to be known, sources in TMC claimed that the college had to suspend the programme under “tremendous pressure by the saffron brigade”, while sources in BJP claimed that Banerjee had withdrawn from the programme on her own.

TMC sources further added that the college had written to the chief minister seeking apology for cancelling the scheduled programme . As reasons , the college has mentioned some “protocol issues”.


Banerjee was supposed to address an interactive session with students in the college. However, she would continue with her plans in Delhi and leave Kolkata on July 30 . Banerjee will be there in Delhi till August 2. She is also scheduled to meet Opposition party leaders including Sonia Gandhi in Parliament.

Significantly, in last one month three events where Banerjee was supposed to participate , were called off. It started with her proposed visit to China, that she cancelled hours before the departure stating meetings with political functionaries in China could not be confirmed. The second one was a proposed programme in Chicago, scheduled in September.

“First, the Vivekananda event in Chicago. Then her China visit and now St Stephens! Mamata Banerjee is giving the BJP-RSS sleepless nights. Let them keep trying, she cannot be silenced. The Bengal CM’s trip to Delhi is on schedule. She will be chief guest at the “Love your Neighbour ” conference organised by India’s largest Christian body, The Catholic Bishops Conference of India, on 31st August at 2.30 pm" said a senior Trinamool MP.
