Nandigram (WB): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday alleged that her predecessor Mamata Banerjee's leg injury during her 2021 assembly poll campaigns in Nandigram was "fake", and asserted that he had documentary evidence to prove it.

Speaking at Birulia bazaar in Nandigram II development block, the same location where Banerjee had sustained her injury five years ago, Adhikari threatened to expose that evidence in public domain, if he was ever challenged.

"I went to the SSKM Hospital after becoming the chief minister. I am the president of the hospital committee since it falls under the jurisdiction of Bhabanipur (assembly seat), from where I am an elected representative," he said.

"The X-ray plate is handed over to the patient concerned, but a copy of the report remains with the hospital. I now have that paper in my possession. She (Mamata Banerjee) was the chief minister then. Her doctors had written 'no fracture'," the CM said.

Adhikari, who was campaigning for the upcoming assembly bypolls in Nandigram in support of the BJP candidate Hasirani Rath, claimed that the door of Banerjee's moving vehicle, which was open, had hit an iron pole on the side of the road and rebounded on her, causing a 'minor injury' to her leg.

She put a bandage on a leg that was fine and used the incident to bring disrepute to the entire Nandigram, the CM claimed.

"I will bring it out in the open, if I am ever challenged. I am also the police minister now. She insulted the entire Birulia locality and this region. The CID had repeatedly summoned our local leaders in connection with that incident. I have not forgotten any of that," Adhikari said.

Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee had sustained a severe left leg and waist injury in the Reyapara area of Birulia in Nandigram on March 10, 2021, during her election campaign.

Banerjee had initially stated that a few unknown persons deliberately pushed her against her open car door, causing it to slam hard against her left leg and crush it amidst a heavy crowd.

In a subsequent video message from the hospital, she recounted that the massive crowd pressed into her car while she was greeting supporters, causing her leg to get crushed and injured.

She was officially diagnosed with severe bone and ligament injuries to her left ankle and foot, along with bruising and pain in her right shoulder, forearm, neck, and waist and was rushed back to Kolkata and admitted to the state-run SSKM Hospital.

Following extensive tests, Banerjee was discharged on March 12, with her left foot in a cast and continued her subsequent campaign in a wheelchair.

The Trinamool Congress had registered an emphatic victory in those polls, with the party bagging 216 of the 294 seats and restricting the BJP to 77.
