Jay Shah, the newly elected ICC Chairman, has drawn mixed reactions following his appointment. While West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee praised his achievement, Shah's rise in cricket administration has sparked debates on nepotism and influence. At 35...

Who is Jay Shah
Jay Shah has made history as the youngest-ever ICC Chairman at the age of 35. He will assume the role from Greg Barclay in December. Shah’s rise in the cricketing world is notable, having started as the son of Amit Shah, India's powerful Home Minister and close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His journey in cricket administration began with his role as the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) joint secretary in 2013. Under his watch, the construction of the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad began.Shah became BCCI Secretary in 2019, overseeing the remarkable growth of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The IPL’s broadcast rights were sold in 2022 for a record $6.2 billion, highlighting the league's massive global appeal. His tenure at BCCI has also seen significant changes, including the establishment of the Women’s Premier League in 2023.
Why has Jay Shah's appointment come under fire
Shah’s ambitions extend beyond the domestic scene. As the head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), he has been a key advocate for cricket’s return to the Olympic Games, aiming for its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Shah envisions this as a pivotal moment for the sport and hopes it will enhance India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics.Despite his achievements, Shah’s career has faced scrutiny. Critics have pointed to accusations of nepotism and the BCCI’s failure to upgrade stadium facilities. His role has also been criticized for potentially extending undue influence over the ICC. Nevertheless, Shah's efforts have been recognized by former India cricket star Sunil Gavaskar, who wrote in Sportstar, “Just as he has done for Indian cricket, both men and women, players worldwide will benefit.”
