Mamata Banerjee launches 'Yogyasree' for SC/ST students in West Bengal, unveils anti-ragging helpline

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee introduced a free training module for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in West Bengal for various entrance and competitive examinations under the name of "Yogyasree", a new social welfare scheme, ahead of Lok Sabha polls. She introduced a toll free anti-ragging number for students and said notification should be put up in all colleges and universities.

The scheme was launched by the Chief Minister on Monday at a programme in Kolkata. Banerjee said, "Fifty centres will be opened all across the state where the SC and ST students will be able to take training completely free of cost for competitive examinations. Similar 46 centres will offer free training to the SC & ST students for students aspiring for government jobs, civil services etc."

She also started a student's internship programme where 2500 students will be receiving such internships. "West Bengal is first in primary education. Jadavpur and Calcutta University have topped as the two top universities in the country," Banerjee said.


She spoke about the various social welfare schemes introduced by students, including Kanyasree, Sabujshree and Student's Credit Card scheme.

She also claimed that her government teaches English from Class I. "Earlier, during the Left Front regime, English was not taught in schools but now we have started teaching English from Class I and also set up English medium schools," Banerjee said.
