West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been facing the heat after her controversial statement on the NRC sparked a row across political barracks.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary have accused Banerjee of making 'provocative statements'.

Patowar has labeled Banerjee's statements as "contempt of court". "As a chief minister Mamata Banerjee should have the basic knowledge that when she opposes a matter (NRC) monitored by the honourable Supreme Court it will amount to contempt of court. She is not above the Supreme Court," he said.

On the other hand Assam Chief Minister has termed her as an "outsider making provocative statements".

West Bengal chief minister had on Tuesday said, "They (BJP) are trying to divide the people. The situation cannot be tolerated. There will be a civil war, bloodbath in the country.”

A complaint has also been registered by the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), one of the prominent students' bodies of Assam on Wednesday against the West Bengal Chief Minister for making 'provocative' statements.

"By going against the Supreme Court, Mamata Banerjee is making all efforts to halt the NRC process by meeting the Union home minister. There is apprehension that an uncalled for situation may be created anytime," Sudipta Hazarika, general secretary of the Central Committee said in the complaint according to PTI.

Banerjee, who now opposes the Narendra Modi led Central government for the NRC and its stand on illegal migrants, has faced flack for her change in stand. In 2005, Mamata Banerjee, who then was a member of the Lok Sabha, had opposed illegal migrants and even demanded a debate on the issue in the parliament.
