KOLKATA: In an interesting development, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today accepted the Iftar invitation of Congres president Sonia Gandhi and assured her that a representative of TMC would attend the programme. Derek O'Brien, TMC national spokesperson and a Rajya Sabha MP have been assigned to attend the programme.

TMC chief Mamata Banerjee today tweeted, “Thank you Sonia Gandhiji for your invitation to Iftar on Monday. My good wishes. As I am in Kolkata, Derek O'Brien will be in Delhi on our behalf.” According to the political observers in Bengal, Banerjee’s message to Sonia Gandhi is 'clear and significant'.

The party insiders told ET that Banerjee’s response to Sonia Gandhi’s invitation might form a new equation. “Even though, we are seeing it as a courtesy on part of Didi, but it might be a beginning for a new political equation. This is a good time to build an anti-NDA force. But it depends on Didi, how she would do it,” said a source in TMC".

It was learnt that a senior leader of CPM would also attend the programme. A source said that a CPM MP might attend the programme. The list of invitees include several regional and national parties those want to take part in building an anti-NDA force.
