Mallya eyes Maharashtra for RS re-election

Names of two industrialists and a film producer are doing rounds as likely candidates for seven Rajya Sabha seats to be filled from Maharashtra on March 26 in the biennial elections to the elders' house.

MUMBAI: Names of two industrialists and a film producer are doing rounds as likely candidates for seven Rajya Sabha seats to be filled from Maharashtra on March 26 in the biennial elections to the elders' house.

In an election, that could render the UPA in a minority in Rajya Sabha, 56 vacancies would be filled from across the country. Largest number of MPs, seven, are retiring from Maharashtra.

Two industrialists-UB group chief Vijay Mallya and Rajkumar Dhoot, Group managing director of Videocon - along with Smita Thackeray, a film producer and daughter-in-law of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray are among hopefuls.

Though Mr Mallya represents Karnataka in Parliament at present, he may cross over to Maharashtra since the neighbouring state assembly has been dissolved and he cannot hope to be re-elected before this year end. The liquor baron is looking at Shiv Sena and NCP as possible launch pads.

Mr Dhoot, on the other hand, is lobbying hard to seek re-nomination from the Sena. According to sources, Mr Dhoot will most probably lose out to Sena chief's daughter-in-law. Mr Dhoot was last time elected to the RS as a Shiv Sena-backed candidate.

Seven members are retiring from Maharashtra followed by six each from TN and Andhra Pradesh, five each from West Bengal and Bihar, four each from Orissa and Gujarat. Three members from Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Rajasthan, two each from Jharkhand, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and one each from Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh would retire in April.
