Malabar Exercise to be held in Bay of bengal from September 4

NEW DELHI: Though the Left parties have announced they will stage picket protests in major eastern coastal cities, the Government on Thursday said the planned five Nation Naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal will be held from September 4.
"It (Malabar Exercise) is on," Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said about the four-day biggest war games ever to be held in Bay of Bengal.
Twenty-four warships from India, the US, Singapore, Australia and Japan are taking part in the Malabar series of naval exercises. The warships in action would include American Nuclear Carrier USS Nimitz and Nuclear-powered Submarine Chicago.
"Armed forces are completely apolitical and work in national interests", the Naval Chief said on the sidelines of a function here. He sidestepped questions on Left parties opposing the holding of war games.
Making it clear that Indian Navy stood to benefit from participating in manoeuvres with other Navies, Mehta said "it is quite an experience for our sailors and officers as they get chance to acquaint with top of the shelf technology and weapons systems".
On Manoeuvres with the world largest navy - US Navy - the Naval Chief said "where do our sailors and officers get a chance to operate in an environment where 40 different aircraft are in the air battle stations".
Mehta said the country's naval forces conducted similar exercises with the navies of Britain, France, Russia, Sri Lanka and China.
