Tribal organisations has rued that representatives from tribal organisations were not included in the 13 member committee which held its first meeting on Wednesday in New Delhi.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has urged the Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, to hold discussions with the Centre to ensure that representatives of all tribes and communities of Assam are included in the 13-member committee constituted by the Union Home Ministry under the chairmanship of Justice (Retired) Bipab Kumar Sarma.
Saikia wrote to the Chief Minister and pointed out that many of these tribes had been living in undivided Assam since pre-historic times, while the process of migration by groups such as the Tai-Ahoms and religious minorities commenced in the 13th century.
Saikia stated, it is desirable to allow representatives of all stake-holders to participate in deliberations regarding their own future.
The Leader of the Opposition appealed to the Chief Minister to ensure that the committee is made more broad-based as that that would assuage the sentiments of all tribes and communities of Assam and also make the recommendations of the committee acceptable to all.
