Majuli declared first island district of India

According to state government making Majuli a district holds immense importance as the island is the most prominent site of the neo-Vaishnavite Bhakti renaissance.

GUWAHATI: World's largest river island Majuli, the site of the neo-Vaishnavite culture on Thursday become the India's first island district.

Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal is MLA from Majuli. A cabinet meeting was held in Majuli. After independence it is first time that state cabinet meeting was held outside the Assam's capital.

According to state government making Majuli a district holds immense importance as the island is the most prominent site of the neo-Vaishnavite Bhakti renaissance witnessed in the north-eastern part of India.

Sonowal said, "If we want to usher in an era of development in Majuli, everybody has to render their concerted efforts."

Sonowal said that the construction of Bogibeel Bridge is at its terminal stage. Dhola-Sadiya Bridge will be commissioned in 2017.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari earlier announced construction of 122 km road connecting Majuli besides two other bridges on the Brahmaputra.
