Majority of Maruti workers boycott union poll

Union elections at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant passed off peacefully, but with a mass boycott by the majority of the workforce.

NEW DELHI: Union elections at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant passed off peacefully, but with a mass boycott by the majority of the workforce that could be a precursor to another confrontation for the country’s largest carmaker.

Most of the workers that abstained from the Saturday’s elections had gone on a 13-day-long strike on June 4 at the Manesar plant under the banner of Maruti Suzuki Employees Union, demanding recognition of their new association. They plan to go ahead with their plans to form their own union.

“Today’s election is a total farce and we are not part of it in any way. Our demand for a separate union continues which we will pursue aggressively in coming days,” said Sonu Gujjar, the president of the rebel MESU.
