Main Bangkok airport closed at least until Monday

BANGKOK: Thailand's airport authority says Bangkok's main international airport will remain closed at least until Monday evening because protesters refuse to leave the premises.

About 2,000 police were deployed today around Suvarnabhumi international airport, where anti-government protesters have camped out since late Tuesday, forcing the halt of all flights.

Airport director Serirat Prasutanont said the standoff has forced the airport authority to extend the airport's closure until at least 6 pm Monday.

Protesters have seized both of Bangkok's airports in their effort to unseat the government.

The confrontation has severed the capital from civilian air traffic and stranded some 100,000 tourists
