Maharashtra floor test: Uddhav proves majority; BJP members stage walk out

MUMBAI: The Uddhav Thackeray-led government proved its majority in a floor test in Maharashtra Assembly today. The Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP alliance government, which calls itself Maha Vikas Aghadi government, got 169 votes.

Before the floor test BJP's Devendra Fadnavis raised questions on the procedure being followed by the assembly and objected that it was not in line with the rules. The same were refuted by the pro tem speaker, Dilip Valse Patil.

The BJP then staged a walk out, and spoke to media outside, accusing the majority of not following procedure.


Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as Maharashtra chief minister on Thursday along with two ministers each from the Sena, NCP and Congress.


The deputy chief minister's post has come the NCP's way as per the power-sharing formula in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government, while the Congress has got the Assembly Speaker's post.

The alliance came into power after Ajit Pawar of NCP withdrew support to the BJP. Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis were both sworn-in as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, respectively in a hushed-up ceremony on November 23. The short lived government was disbanded after the Supreme Court asked the coalition of Ajit Pawar led NCP and the BJP to prove majority via a floor test.

Soon after Ajit Pawar resigned from the post of deputy CM and later Fadnavis too handed over his resignation letter to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

The 288- member House has 105 BJP MLAs, 56 Shiv Sena MLAs, 54 NCP MLAs and 54 INC MLAs.

The NDA alliance of BJP and Shiv Sena had fought the state assembly election under the aegis of an alliance but in a dramatic turn of events the coalition was disbanded when both the parties failed to reach a consensus on who would get the Chief Minister post in the state.

While the BJP claimed it had always promised Devendra Fadnavis as the Chief Minister of the state if NDA allies won, Shiv Sena says it arrived at an arrangement with the BJP of sharing the CM's post for 2.5 years each.
