The Maharashtra Cabinet has made a significant decision to rename eight Mumbai railway stations that have names dating back to the British colonial era. This move aims to embrace Indian culture and history.

Here are the names of the stations whose names have been changed:
  • Cotton Green- Kalachowki
  • Charni Road- Girgaon
  • Dockyard Road- Mazgaon
  • King Circle- Tirthakar Parshivnath
  • Curry Road- Lalbaug
  • Sandhurst Road- Dongri
  • Marine Lines- Mumbadevi

Moreover, Mumbai Central Station will be given the new name of Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth Station, pending approval from the Railways Ministry. This decision is expected to reflect the rich heritage of Maharashtra.


In another development, the cabinet has approved the purchase of 2.5 acres of land in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, to construct a Maharashtra Bhavan. The budget proposal for this construction was already included in the state budget during the previous session of the Maharashtra Assembly.

Furthermore, Ahmednagar district will be renamed as Ahilya Nagar, signifying the importance of local identity. The cabinet has also given the green light for the construction of a sea link between Uttan (Bhayander) and Virar (Palghar).

The meeting where these decisions were taken was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar, and other cabinet members.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off 10 high-speed Vande Bharat trains, including one between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the 'One station, one product' initiative, which is expected to create employment opportunities for locals. Maharashtra has received a total of 17 Vande Bharat trains, and the Chief Minister thanked PM Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their support.
