Maha cities plan to follow Pune model to avoid load shedding

Many cities in Maharashtra are planning to follow the now famous Pune model to avoid load shedding, sources said

MUMBAI: Many cities in Maharashtra are planning to follow the now famous Pune model to avoid load shedding, sources said.

The latest one to join the bandwagon is Baramati, which also has managed to rope in a private power producer to make good the shortfall in supply of power from Mahavitaran, the state power distribution company.

The state electricity regulator cleared its proposal last week.

Now in the pipeline are the applications from cities like Thane, Mulund-Bhandup-Kanjur and Navi Mumbai which have sought to follow the Pune model under which a private power producer offers to supply the power for a certain duration during the day and the consumers in the area offer to pay a certain reliability charge to meet the additional cost of power so received.

Besides, a survey by an industry body had found that the Pune model could be applied to cities like Nashik, Kolhapur and Aurangabad. However, there have been no concrete proposals received from these cities as of now.

Sources in Mahavitaran said the inititiative for this has to come from local people-associations. Like in Baramati, it was the Baramati Vyapari Mahasangh which pursued the matter and was appointed as franchisee. In case of Thane, the initiative has been taken by Mumbai Grahak Panchayat and Thane Small Scale Ind Association.

"It is a no loss-no profit proposition for Mahavitaran when it agrees to implement this model," a source said.
