Madan Tamang killed by unidentified assailants in Darjeeling

All India Gorkha League prez Tamang was killed by unidentified assailants.

SILIGURI (WEST BENGAL): All India Gorkha League president and Gorkhaland proponent Madan Tamang was killed after being attacked with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants in Darjeeling town.

"Tamang was attacked near Planters' Club this morning when he was supervising the arrangements for a meeting to be held later in the day. Miscreants hit him with kukris and swords, wounding him on the shoulder and stomach," Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) K L Tamta told PTI.

Tamang recently opposed GJM's stand on an interim set-up for Darjeeling hills and demanded Gorkhaland instead.

Tamta said AIGL initially decided to hold the meeting at Darjeeling Chowrasta but later shifted the venue due to opposition from GJM.

Immediately after the attack on Tamang, shops and markets closed down, police said.
