CHENNAI: DMK chief MK Stalin has backed Congress president Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition bloc for the 2019 parliamentary elections.

“In 2018, on the occasion of unveiling Thalaivar Kalaignar’s statue, I propose, we will install a new prime minister in Delhi. We will build a new India. As the son of Thalaivar Kalaignar, I propose the candidature of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul has got the ability to defeat the ‘Fascist Nazist’ Modi government. We will strengthen the hands of Rahul Gandhi. We will save this nation,” Stalin said.

“As far as the DMK is concerned, the move further cements the ties with the Congress,” a political analyst, wishing to remain unnamed, said about Stalin’s endorsement of the Congress president.
